Join Amy Cook for a fascinating talk and presentation on the birth of apartment living in New York City. The talk covers the social, geographical and technological factors shaping the ever-present and evolving patchwork of solutions to Manhattan’s (and Brooklyn’s!) housing woes.

Using historical images and floor plans, Amy’s talk focuses on the period between 1870 and 1930, following the transition from freestanding abodes through row houses, spliced living arrangements, residential hotels all the way to grand buildings like the Ansonia, Chelsea and Dakota.
This talk will take place at the historic and beautiful Montauk Club, a Gilded Age gem established as a private club in 1889.

Your Lecturer:
Amy Cook studied history and urban planning at the University of Virginia. She gave her first tours at a winery near Monticello and has worked in restaurants, so food and libations sneak into just about every talk. A Brooklynite since 1998, Amy is an avid explorer of the city. She leads the Historic Hotels tour for the Bowery Boys and is a Guides Association of NYC Certified Guide. You can reach her here.
